Have you been trying to wrap your head around why this whole goal setting thing is not working out for you? You set goals every year, however you very rarely accomplish everything that you set out. Now is the time to start reevaluating your process and figure out why you have been so unsuccessful with goal setting.
Here are 15 common mistakes that you may be making.
1.Your goals are not written
You will never accomplish your goals if you keep them in your head. If you forget to do things that are a part of your daily routine, how do you think you will be able to keep a whole year of goals or more in your head. Write your goals out and make them real.
2. Your goals are not specific
You have to set specific goals. Saying that “I want to increase my revenue this year” is not going to cut it. How are you going to increase your revenue? Instead say that “My yearly revenue goal is $100,000 and I will achieve it by obtaining X coaching clients, selling X planners, and host X events.”
3. You don’t have an action plan
A goal without an action plan will never get accomplished. You can only achieve your goals if you know what it takes to make them reality. The key to checking goals off your list is execution.
4. Your goals are unrealistic
I believe that you can accomplish anything you set your heart out to do, but you also have to make sure that you are realistic. Saying that you want to make six figures next year and you haven’t made three figures this year may be a bit far fetched. Is it possible to make six figures? Absolutely, but you have to work extremely hard and create a six-figure action plan and stick to it.
5. You haven’t set a completion date
If you haven’t set an estimated completion date, chances are that goal is going to sit on your goals list forever. When you set goals, establish when you want to see it come to fruition.
6. You haven’t set S.M.A.R.T. goals
If you struggle with the last 4 common mistakes above, chances are this one makes 5. When you set goals that you actually want to achieve they have to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Simple goals like I want to lose weight or I want to increase my following will not help you achieve the success you desire.
7. Your goals are not intentional
You have to be intentional when you set goals. Many goals aren’t achieved because they lack purpose. So before you decide to add a goal to your list, ask yourself these 4 questions:
- Is this goal aligned with my purpose?
- Is this goal aligned with my passion?
- Is this goal aligned the overall goals for my future?
- Is this goal aligned with my core values?
If not, then you need to keep moving along until all your goals are intentional.
8. Your goals are not visible
It’s great to write your goals out, but when they are trapped away in your journals and notebooks sometimes you tend to forget about them. I suggest that you create a vision board and keep it in plain sight so that you can see it everyday. You can also make it your screensaver on your phone. I have all of my goals on big post it notes on my wall so everyday I know exactly what I need to be working toward.
9. You spend too much time planning
You are spending way too much time planning. At some point you have to start executing. You can’t wait until you have the everything planned out 100% because things change. Things don’t always go as planned and you will never have everything completely figured out if you aren’t working on it. Sometimes you just have to jump out there and figure a few things out along the way. The longer you keep planning the further you are pulling yourself away from success.
10. You give up too soon
Success doesn’t happen overnight. You have to believe in your dreams and make a commitment to stick to them until they become reality. It may take a year or even a couple years, but keep building your foundation, keep learning, and keep pushing forward. Remember that what’s yours is yours and in its right timing you will receive it as long as you consistently work toward achieving it.
11. You are setting too many goals
You can never have too many goals, but when you try to attack them all at once you become overwhelmed and have no idea where to start. Start spreading your goals out and categorizing them as short term and long term goals. Determine what quarter of the year you will work on each goal so that you aren’t overwhelmed.
12. You aren’t tracking your progress
Sometimes you have to take a step back and ask yourself if you are on track for your completion date. You may need to evaluate your process or decide if you need additional time to complete your goal. You may need to push your goals back to a future date, but if you aren’t tracking and analyzing your progress you will always miss your mark.
13. You are setting goals based on trends
Don’t be a follower and don’t feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing or what’s popular at the moment. This goes back to being intentional. The more you stray away from what you were truly called to do the longer you hold up those who are counting on you for their success.
14. You are not visualizing
You have to materialize your goals. The mind is a powerful tool and visualization is one of the fastest ways to manifest your goals. You have to see yourself living your dreams. Write affirmations and post them around the house or your office. Write yourself a check with a date of when you expect to receive that million dollars you desire. You can achieve whatever you believe and whatever you can see.
15. You don’t have an accountability partner
Who’s holding you accountable to your goals? If you decide you don’t want to work on your goals today and then it turns into a pattern and months have gone by without you being productive…well that’s pretty bad. If you have an accountability partner you’ll have someone to helps you stay committed and on track for your success.
